CYRUS FELT UTTERLY defeated as he ambled up the stairs on the crutches he was coming to detest. Hopelessness consumed him as he stuck his key in the deadbolt lock, turning it before doing the same with the knob. Pushing open the door, he took in the sight before him and almost fainted in relief.

Claire sat on the floor surrounded by a multitude of yellow papers, all with her succinct scribble, torn haphazardly from the notepad she held in her lap. Peering over her shoulder, she beamed.

“Hey, chief.” She gave a wave. “About time. I was getting worried.”

Expelling a huge sigh of relief, he closed the door and maneuvered toward her, throwing the crutches aside and lowering to his knees. Cupping her face in his hands, his eyes darted between hers.

“How did you escape?”

“Did you doubt me? You know me better than to think I’d let some second-rate criminals keep me hostage for long.”

“Oh, my god,” he breathed, staring at the ceiling as he struggled to regulate his heartbeat. “I was so worried.”

“I know,” she said, encircling his wrist as he held her face. “I knew you wouldn’t rest until you found me. But I also figured I should try to escape. Surprise! I’m pretty badass.”

A laugh escaped his throat. “You’re so fucking badass, Finch. What happened?”

She told him everything down to the last detail, particularly adamant when she explained how she’d gotten the upper hand on Sebastian. “He told me I stabbed him in the neck in every timeline, so I tried to change it up. I stuck the file right through his dick, Cyrus, and I’m pretty sure I caught some ball too. Fucking bastard. He’s never going to pee straight again.”

Cyrus embraced her, overcome with joy that she was alive and unharmed. “Damn, woman. Don’t ever come near me with a pair of toenail clippers.” Drawing back, he couldn’t contain his grin. “And I mean, ever.”

“Ten-four,” she said, giving him a teasing salute. “He deserved it. Kidnapped me and called me fat. Screw him. He was definitely no Brad Pitt either.”

Cyrus’s eyebrows drew together.

“Saw his picture in one of Doc Viv’s waiting room magazines,” she said, waving a dismissive hand. “Hot. Like, Hunter Rhodes hot.”

“Rhodes isn’t that hot. He’s short, and I’m pretty sure his teeth will fall out one day from chewing those damn toothpicks.”

“Everyone is short compared to you, Cyrus. You’re six-six, for god’s sake. I think he’s six-two. And he’s hot, believe me. You’re not jealous, are you?”

“No,” he lied.

“Holy crap! You’re jealous of Captain McHotty Pants! Don’t worry, you’re way hotter than he is. I promise.” She drew an X over her heart.

The words elated him, although they shouldn’t have since he’d vowed to never touch her again. He studied her, realizing they now had a plethora of problems that didn’t exist before. It was worrisome, and he struggled with how to move forward.

“I know,” she said, shaking her head as she looked at the pages strewn around her. “I’m doing my best to compile all the information I have.
